The ANSI Tolerance Most Slabs Don't Meet
For tiles 15 inches or longer on any side, substrate variation must not exceed 1/8 inch in 10 feet. For gauged porcelain panels on premium hospitality projects, 1/16 inch in 10 feet is common. Most existing commercial slabs don't meet these tolerances without preparation — we level with cementitious self-leveling underlayment when they don't.

We measure before installation and level with cementitious underlayment if the substrate does not meet the standard.
In some cases, yes — if the existing tile or terrazzo is sound, well-bonded, and flat enough to meet the tolerance requirements. We assess the existing surface for hollow spots, delamination, and flatness. If removal is required, the Clean Slate Process handles it without grinding dust.

Retrofit projects over aged concrete almost never meet the flatness tolerances large-format tile requires. We pour cementitious self-leveling underlayment to create a flat, level surface. The pour typically adds 1/4 to 1/2 inch of substrate height and achieves FF 30 to 40 flatness numbers — well within the ANSI tolerance.
